The name of our school when first in began was Maradana Girls’ Senior School. As this didn’t sound elegant enough, and Royal College for girls was suggested. However the decision restated as Government Girls College, Colombo 10 for some years. Today it has changed as Gothami Balika Vidyalaya.

Then Minister for Education, the honorable Dr. C. W. W. Kannangara, who was at the time successfully dubbed ‘The Peddler of  the Pearl of Great Peace’ wanted to establish the first government girl’s college in Ceylon under free education shame skeptics in educational department then, and educational nodded with great doubts as to its success.

Mrs. Gladis Perera who was the first principal of school had been registering pupils from 10th June 1946. The ceremonial inauguration of this college was held on 30th September 1946, presided over by Honorable Dr. C. W. W. Kannangara in the presence of the following  distinguishes persons. This honorable D. S. Senanayake, the honorable S. W. R. D. Bandaranayake and Mr. S. S. Kulathilake, Honorable Minister for Cultural Affairs.
